Primary Source: Dead and Missing from North Carolina in World War II

More than 8,500 North Carolinians who served in World War II did not return. The National Archives made available the complete lists of war casualties from each state in 1946. Below are the official publications for the state of North Carolina.

Army and Army Air Force

The World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing Army and Army Air Forces Personnel from North Carolina lists all soldiers by county. The "tabulation" gives total numbers for each county.

Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard

The State Summary of War Casualties from World War II for Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Personnel from North Carolina does not list casualties by county, but includes the names of all personnel wounded in action.
